Product Details

Pachira aquatica, commonly known as the Money Tree, is a popular houseplant often associated with good luck and prosperity. It features a distinctive thick, often braided trunk, and glossy, palmate leaves with five to seven leaflets. The trunk can grow quite thick and sturdy, giving the plant an attractive and unique appearance. In its natural habitat, Pachira aquatica can grow up to 18 metres tall, but as a houseplant, it typically reaches 1.5 to 2 metres in height. The leaves are bright green, contributing to its lush, tropical look.

Care Guide for Pachira Aquatica (Thick Trunk)

Light:

  • Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate low light but grows best in moderate to bright indirect sunlight.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering:

  • Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry.
  • Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
  • Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant's growth slows down.

Humidity:

  • Thrives in high humidity environments but can adapt to average household humidity.
  • If the air is very dry, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water.

Temperature:

  • Prefers temperatures between 18°C to 24°C.
  • Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil:

  • Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix of peat, perlite, and sand or a commercial cactus mix works well.
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Fertilisation:

  • Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows.

Pruning:

  • Prune to maintain the desired shape and size. Regular pruning encourages new growth and helps keep the plant compact.
  • Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain plant health.

Repotting:

  • Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.
  • Choose a pot that is one size larger than the current one to give the roots room to grow.

Propagation:

  • Can be propagated from cuttings or seeds.
    1. For cuttings, cut a healthy stem just below a node and plant it in a well-draining potting mix.
    2. Keep the soil moist and place the cutting in a warm, bright location until new growth appears.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally suffer from spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects.
  • Inspect the plant regularly and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Root rot can be a problem if the plant is overwatered or if the soil does not drain well.

Toxicity:

  • Generally considered non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe choice for homes with animals and children.

Tips:

  • Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even growth on all sides.
  • Clean the leaves occasionally to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis.
  • If the plant becomes leggy, prune it back to encourage bushier growth.

By following these care guidelines, your Pachira aquatica with its thick trunk will thrive and continue to be an attractive and prosperous addition to your home.
